Kimberly TallBear Joins IIIRM

Denver, March 6, 2000. Kimberly TallBear, (Dakota and member of the Cheyenne & Araphoe Tribes of Oklahoma) began working March 6 as a Senior Researcher with the International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management, based in Denver. Her work with the Institute will focus on assessing the cultural, ethical, political, and economic implications for tribes of genetic research including human genetic research and risks to tribes from the cleanup of federal facilities environmental contamination through bioremediation (the use of microorganisms such as bacteria to remove pollution from soil, water, or gases). She returns to Denver after living two years in West Java, Indonesia where she was writing a book. She has worked as a consultant to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and the Center for International Forestry Research in Indonesia. Kim has also worked for the Council of Energy Resource Tribes environmental program, for the U.S. EPA Region I Indian Program, and for JK Research Associates on tribal involvement for the U.S. Department of Energy's Consortium for Environmental Risk Evaluation. She has degrees from the University of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
